As well as identifying the culprit should your home get broken into, a security system can greatly reduce the chances of it occurring in the first place. There are a range of DIY alarm and CCTV  systems on the market today, however they are often of lower quality and potentially less reliable. Should you experience a power outage your alarm system will rely on a back up battery so that it can still work efficiently until the power returns. Most back up batteries last for a minimum of 10 hours, with extra long batteries available on the market.

In the past alarm systems were triggering an alarm after sensing a pet in the house. Technology has advanced immensely with sensors now being able to identify the difference between your pet and a potential intruder. Wired and wireless systems each have their advantages and disadvantages depending on location and specific requirements.

A wired system is typically considered the most reliable, however somewhat more vulnerable to tampering with exposed cables at risk of being cut. They are also more expensive to install due to additional time spent wiring the components, however they require much less maintenance.

Wireless systems are considered more appropriate for those with a property lacking roof and under house space to conceal potential wires, and are therefore quicker and cheaper to install. They do require more maintenance with the components running on battery power, however batteries last from 2-4 years before needing replacement.

Older alarms have quickly become outdated with an influx of new valuable technology. Old systems can easily be upgraded with new state of the art systems often using the existing wiring to keep installation costs down.
